Dr Hilke GilesWelcome to Pisces Consulting. My name is Hilke Giles and I am the Managing Director of Pisces Consulting.
I am a coastal and systems scientist with experience in research, applied science, resource management, business management, operation and governance. I have a passion for working with others to overcome challenges and create enduring solutions. I enjoy exploring information, issues and opportunities, listening to different perspectives and coming up with approaches that are robust, targeted, and efficient. It gives me great satisfaction to see a solution successfully implemented and working well for my client. |
My background
I have extensive expertise and experience in many aspects of coastal and marine science with a strong emphasis on applied science, aquaculture, resource management and strategic planning. I have a track record in developing practical solutions to varied and complex problems that require sound understanding of science, policy, compliance requirements, business practices and stakeholder perspectives.
After completing two Masters degrees (Marine Biology and Applied Systems Science) and a PhD (Marine Biology), I worked at the National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) as a post-doctoral fellow (numerical modelling of finfish aquaculture deposition in coastal sediments) and sediment biogeochemist. I then worked for eight years at Waikato Regional Council as a coastal scientist and later as Coastal Team Leader. I enjoy broadening my horizon and expertise and over the years have obtained a Diploma in Law, Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies, and the RMA Commissioner accreditation. I am well-connected in the New Zealand marine sciences community and was the President of the New Zealand Marine Sciences Society from 2016-2018. In addition to my science and resource management background I used to be a SCUBA dive instructor, scientific diver, and first aid instructor. I continue to hold a governance positions in a Private Training Establishment providing first aid education.
In 2018 I established Pisces Consulting Limited. Since then I have provided independent consultancy services to a range of industries operating in the coastal marine area, councils, central government, and science organisations.

My approach
I put a strong emphasis on understanding my clients’ needs, working collaboratively and communicating effectively.
I think analytically and strategically with an outcome focus. I identify and differentiate between real and side issues, prioritise tasks and time and set realistic timeframes. This provides you with the confidence that the job gets done efficiently, effectively and on time.
I understand that work in the resource management context needs to be defensible and robust. I achieve this by producing evidence-based information and ensuring a high standard of quality control. I balance scientific rigor with pragmatism and create solutions that are fit for purpose and have enduring relevance.
I am comfortable handling risk and uncertainty. I am sensitive to political processes and anticipate and manage risks proactively. I can help you manoeuvre through complex political situations effectively. I know how to get things done within an organisational and political context and understand how to work with different organisational cultures.
I enjoy leading your project but am equally comfortable contributing to a project in a support role. As such I am happy to support you in whatever way best meets your needs. Please contact me if you like to discuss how I can assist you.
